BackTag

Fallback Sortation Tags

Introduction and Overview

Damarel provides business solutions for Airport Operations.

The modern airport consists of a complex set of integrated systems designed to facilitate both passenger throughput and security. The Baggage Sortation System (BSS) is an important component of this process, with its baggage identification and high-speed routing to chutes.

However, a BSS relies on receiving Baggage Sortation Messages (BSM) in order to identify and route a bag. In the event that the DCS system at the airport cannot provide BSMs (for example host down, communication failure, manual check-in, etc.) then there is an immediate requirement to provide pier tags (fallback tags) such that the BSS can continue to automatically sort bags.

BackTag is an application that provides this functionality.

Functional Highlights

Fallback Tags

BackTag produces fallback tags in full accordance with IATA RP 1740b for Licence Plate Fallback Sortation Tags.

This practice includes recommendations for elements such as:

  • Airport name
  • Airport code
  • Handling agent code
  • Fallback tag number
  • Chute number
  • Picket fence and ladder bar codes

Tags On Demand

Traditionally, fallback tags are mass printed and stored for use when required. BackTag makes use of the existing bag tag peripherals to enable fallback tags to be produced on demand at the check-in desk. Agents can either Alt-Tab to the BackTag application and produce the exact number required as passengers check-in, or they can run a quantity off in advance for later use.

The simplified interface allows agents to simply specify the chute number and the numbers of tags to be produced. The BackTag configuration files take care of formatting the tag number with the airline code and sortation station.

Use Of Stock

BackTag uses full ATB PECTAB technology to customise the tag layout to fit the stock. This means that airlines can continue to use their own branded stock, and removes the need for agents to swap stock during what is normally a very busy period.
