In 1998, Damarel were selected by ARINC to provide Japan Airlines with a new check-in system for their international operations in Japan.

The main thrust of the project was to provide JAL with an intuitive, fully graphical front-end for their host DCS, JALCOM. This fully bespoke development, known as JALPAS/I B-DCS, was produced in close consultation with JAL, and covered all aspects of their check-in operation.

By providing a modern, easy-to-use GUI, JAL managed to simplify agent training, dramatically reducing costs over traditional training in the native DCS language - a significant saving for large sites such as Tokyo Narita, which has over 1000 agents.

JALPAS/I also had another significant feature - the ability to continue working in the event of a host communication failure.

By querying the host to retrieve and store essential data, JALPAS/I was able to switch to local mode on demand, allowing agents to continue processing passengers in the event of a host outage.

The software suite was installed on ARINC’s MUSE platform at all airports in Japan from which JAL operate international flights (including the very busy Tokyo Narita, Tokyo Haneda and Osaka Kansai), and at airports worldwide where JAL operate and which have the ARINC MUSE CUTE system (including London Heathrow, New York JFK and Seoul Incheon).

Along with JALPAS/I, Damarel also provided JAL with a number of other solutions, including products such as Babel and LBA2. These were used for JAL's 3rd party  handling contracts, allowing them to efficiently handle the other carriers in their own native DCS, without the need for extensive re-training.

Damarel also supplied a whole suite of separate utilities to enhance JAL's passenger handling operation, including a Local Boarding capability, Offline Printing, Meal Coupon Printing, Lounge Registration and Baggage Reconciliation.

Damarel have continued to enhance these applications over the past 8 years and have recently been contracted to produce the next generation JALPAS/I system. This new system will feature touch screen operation for agents at check-in, together with support for the latest generation of printer peripherals.
